The arrival of spring brings joy to both people and pets. Spring usually means more time spent outdoors and long walks in the countryside or the mountains in the company of our four-legged friends. However, it comes at a cost, with an upsurge of diseases, insect bites, seasonal allergies and external parasitization.

In order to enjoy the good weather responsibly, it is essential that you follow a series of guidelines to prevent your pet from suffering from illnesses.

If you walk in a pine area, you will have to be especially careful with processionary caterpillars. These worms are very poisonous, especially to dogs, and can be found both in residential gardens and in urban parks.

Deworming your dog

Although deworming should be carried out all year round, in spring tick, flea and mosquito bites are on the rise. Therefore, as the different veterinary associations in Spain point out, the most important thing is to work on prevention. At this time it is essential that you protect your dog from possible insect bites as well as infectious and parasitic diseases.

On the other hand, fleas and ticks not only cause discomfort and itchiness to pets but are also transmitters of very dangerous diseases. For this reason, your furry friend could suffer from allergic dermatitis or anaemia, among other ailments. In addition, ticks can also infect humans, since they carry blood parasites.

It is also important to remember that insects can spread leishmaniasis and dirofilariasis to your dog, among other very dangerous diseases. Again, we insist on the importance of de-worming pets and preventing any infection. In the market, you will find pipettes, shampoos and collars among a great variety of products. Follow your vet's instructions and choose the one that best suits your pet. There are also vaccines that protect animals from certain parasites, so protect your pet and have peace of mind!

Finally, you should think about the general care that your dog should never lack: a balanced, quality diet, routine visits to the specialist, daily physical exercise and proper hygiene.
