The most amazing records of 2019
It is clear that whatever the date of your birthday or that of an acquaintance, there will surely be a record that has been achieved on that particular day of the year, as there are records for all tastes in the Guinness World Records yearbook. From animals, viral sports, our planet Earth, technology and engineering, robots, art and communication, society records... in the 2020 edition the toughest rise with the first places in the most impressive achievements -some very crazy- that were achieved during this year.
What do you think is the longest flight of stairs in an hour? For in the men’s category, David Robles Tapia managed in 60 minutes to climb the average of 18 times the 424 steps -equivalent to a height of 1,227 meters - of the World Trade Center of Zaragoza on 25 January 2019. To save time, Robles used the elevator for descents, but that doesn’t take away the fact that it is a record of height.
By comparison, the same day on January 25, but in 2013, they found that a hair from the belly of Elaine Martin (USA) reaches 16.77 cm. It rose with the achievement of the hair of a longer belly in Owensboro, Kentucky.
Did you know that the international record management team has reviewed more than 100 applications for GWR every day? Yes. Thousands of applications are received each year and after examining that the key requirements are met, as there is a rigorous evaluation process, only 5-15% of all applications received each year can be approved. This year, as shown, the world’s shortest pencil record of the world was denied or the highest number of unread emails was missed because of a failure in one of the key requirements to be able to access a Guinness World Record. Despite this, the team has this year cleared more than 5,100 applications.
The Guinness World Record 2020 yearbook covers a wide range of topics ranging from A to Z. As the team itself comments, it literally ranges from archaeology to zoology.
Over the past 12 months, they have redoubled their efforts by making trips to many more locations, as talent hunters have attended more events than ever-and many different ones-spread across the globe.

It was precisely Marvel Entertainment and Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe that brought together 547 fans of the Marvel character to wear Peter Parker’s superhero costume in Stockholm, Sweden. It was on November 16, 2018 and the event was held along with a series of events to mark the launch of the Spider-Man video game. Among the attendees was the editor of Marvel C.B. Cebulski.
In January 2019, the first 3D printed rib was announced. The printing company was 3dbgprint from Bulgaria and manufactured it in less than 24 hours with a nylon-based material. The patient who received the first 3D printed rib was the Bulgarian Ivaylo Josifov at the Tokuda Hospital in Sofia.
As verified by the GWR committee, Kane Tanaka of Japan is the oldest living person at the age of 116. The record was verified on March 16, 2019. It is one of the longest-lived people of all time. Tanaka was born on January 2, 1903, the same year the Wright brothers made their first propelled flight. He currently lives in an asylum enjoying his favorite hobbies: mathematics and the board game Othello. Remember that the longest-lived person of all time reached 122 years and 164 days: Jeanne Louise Calment.
Speaking of longevity records, scientist Arthur Ashkin is the world’s longest-serving Nobel Prize winner: he is 97 years old and received the Nobel Prize for Physics (with Donna Strickland and Gérard Mourou) 96 years and 31 days for their work on optical clamps, due to their significant contributions in the field of laser physics, according to the Swedish committee.
Nilanshi Patel, known as the teen Rapunzel, the youngster won the record with the longest hair when on November 21, 2018 her hair reached the length of 1.75 meters when she was 16 years old. Patel explained that his hair has been growing steadily without going through the hairdresser’s since he was 6 years old and refers to his hair as his luck charm. But every time he washes his hair, it takes an hour and a half to fix it. His length is such that he always wears it in a braid.
A great feat. More time juggling three objects on a balance table. The achievement was achieved on February 8, 2019 when Japan’s Yutaro Nagao juggled three balls for 41 minutes and 19 seconds on a balance board. The GWR was achieved in Tokyo.
It was on 20 February 2018 that Stefano Righi managed to make an incredible soap bubble of no less than 66 centimetres in diameter, in Empoli, Italy. A record only for experts, because to achieve it, the applicant must form a pump on a flat surface, fill it with flammable gas and bring a flame closer to ignite it. Not easy at all!
If as early as August 2018 we see the record for the most torches extinguished by a fire-eater in one minute (101 torches extinguished by mouth in 60 seconds), on 27 January 2019, the committee of Guinness World Record has certified and confirmed the record of more torches extinguished in an alternative minute. In total there were 73 torches by the hand of Isobel Midnight, alias of Laura Sutton and Lady Noelia, alias of the Spanish Noelia Hueso. In the same session, Isobel Midnight scored the record for the most torches extinguished in a minute with a total of 78.
The American youtuber Elton Castee invited over a thousand people to help him beat several Guinness World Records. Thus, on January 26, 2019, he managed to get 252 people to disguise themselves as dinosaurs. But he not only achieved this record, but also the highest number of nationalities kissed in one minute (50) and the highest number of nationalities that have participated in a collective embrace (also 50).
Up to 60 duelists fought on December 15, 2018 in the Skillcon of Las Vegas (U.S.A. using material inspired by the luminescent weapons of the Star Wars saga, the lightsabers of Star Wars. Cang Snow was the winner in this curious competition, which is also the founder of the Liga de Sabes de Luz. In February 2019, Franca chose to recognize as an official sport the duel of lightsabers as a new form of fencing, so the fencing clubs in this country already have their lightsabers of polycarbonate to train. It’s funny, isn’t it?
On May 20, 2018, American Stanley Chapel managed to solve a 4 x 4 Rubik’s cube blindfolded in just 1 minute and 29 seconds in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Stanley broke the record at the World Cube Associations CubingUSA Great Lakes Championships.
The Scottish cyclist Jenny Graham managed from June 16 to October 18, 2018 to go around the world in just 124 days and 11 hours, in a journey that began and ended in Berlin, Germany. Graham didn’t have any support at all during this time, so she carried his entire team by herself. Even so, the person holding the absolute record for fastest circumnavigation by bike is Mark Beaumont, who made it in 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes.
As of March 2019, the Guinness World Records yearbook closes, K2, the second highest mountain on Earth after Everest with its 8,611 meters, has yet to be crowned during the winter season, both the calendar season (from 20 December to 20 March) as the meteorological (from 1 December to 28 February). There have been five attempts to climb the mountain in winter, but they have all been unsuccessful.
The City Montessori School of Lucknow, India, achieved the record of the largest school in terms of student numbers on 16 January 2019, with 55,547 students enrolled. Among other things, the school admits children from the age of 3, so that even secondary school can stay in the same building. It is curious that this school, with more than 1,000 classrooms today, began with only five students in 1959.
